BIRMINGHAM, AL —The Florida A&M women’s basketball team kept Grambling to just 9.1 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-11 shooting performance, but fell 66-60 to the Tigers at Bartow Arena Wednesday.
The Rattlers (9-21) had two players score in double figures, led by Ahriahna Grizzle, who had 16 points and five assists. Olivia Delancy tacked on 14 points and Ivet Subirats added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Nashani Gilbert pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 19 boards and turning them into 16 second chance points.
The Florida A&M defense held Grambling shooters to only 39.4 percent from the field, including 9.1 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-11, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 3:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Delancy, to take a 16-13 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-16.
Grambling kept adding to that lead, building a 25-16 advantage before Florida A&M went on an 8-0 run to narrow its deficit to 25-24. Grambling responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Rattlers trailing 34-28 heading into halftime.
Grambling continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-32 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Delancy, to trim its deficit to 39-37 with 4:18 to go in the third. Grambling countered and stretched its lead to 51-43 heading into the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
Florida A&M narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 66-60. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
